Have you ever seen a ghost...?

Writer: Jared GraceJared Grace

Let me tell you a story. I certainly have...seen a ghost, I mean. I've seen plenty, honestly. But the first time was back when I was no more than five or six years old. I was always tall, even as a kid. (I'm 6'3 now.) I lived in Randolph, MA at the time in a house that, to this day, I drive by whenever I'm in the neighborhood. I had a great childhood. I live a very nostalgic life. Even today, I'm drawn to stories that follow the protagonists throughout their life's journey. I credit that to the childhood I had. In a time before smartphones had us all glued to the screens and when you rode your bike down the road to see whose bikes were where and who was playing with who.

But I digress.

My house was on the corner of a busy road at the beginning of the "Terrace neighborhood". On this particular day, I was taking a nap in what later became my sister's bedroom. I was woken by someone playfully tickling my feet. I'm sure you can all relate to waking up slowly and your eyes being blurry, sleep still trying to hang on to the last few moments of unconsciousness. At the end of my bed, through blurry eyes, I saw a man sitting there. Now, I loosely say man, I was five or six years old, a "man" could have been a teenager. I do not recall what he looked like, but I can clearly remember seeing him sitting there. I remember believing that it was my father and I grumbled something along the lines of "Dad, stop. I'm trying to sleep."

The tickling stopped.

I fell back asleep for I'm not sure how long. When I was once again awoken by my feet being tickled. I sat up straight quickly and snapped my eyes open. "Dad, STOP!" But when my eyes opened, free of sleep this time, there was no one there. Yet, my feet were still being tickled. I jumped out of bed and ran downstairs to my mother who was on the phone and told her all about it. I'm not sure she believed me. I'm not sure she ever believed us when my brother and I had experiences. It's not a shot at her in any way, it's just the way it seemed. Later in life, she's willing to talk about our experiences, mine specifically, though she is still hesitant to believe. This past Christmas, as we sat around talking about the past and my experiences came up again, she admitted that it is more believable since my stories have not changed one word in over 35 years. These are burned into my mind, and I hope to share many more with you all.

One other piece of this story that I find interesting is this. Shortly before this incident happened (be it a few weeks/months/or a year, I'm not entirely sure, but it wasn't long before this incident) two young men were driving extremely fast down our street. They crashed into the telephone pole just outside my house. One of the boys was ejected from the car and died just outside our house. The other was sent into the backseat of the car from the impact. My father, a cop for most of his life, ran over to check on the two immediately. The one ejected died instantly. The other, as far as I remember the story, died later.

For anyone who has researched or knows about paranormal incidents, especially those involving ghosts, children are more susceptible to contact. They haven't been told by the world that ghosts don't exist (tainting their perception of what's there). At least, that's what I've always believed. Perhaps, that man sitting at the end of my bed was the man who was ejected from the car and died just outside our home?

One thing I've learned in my lifelong love of the paranormal is that there are plenty of cases of entities trying to take over a person through their feet (it's true, look it up). I wonder if what I saw was as benevolent as I had hoped or if it was perhaps something worse...I think I'll choose to believe it was no more than that young man just looking to play with a young kid who was trying to take his afternoon nap, his long legs hanging out from under his blanket. Until I was in my late teens, I couldn't sleep without socks on. Traumatic experiences will manifest in many different ways.

So, have you ever seen a ghost? Or what you thought might have been? Leave me a comment about your first (or only) experience if you're open enough to share.
